We Are the International Voice

We are the international voice for maritime search and rescue organisations through our consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) – the relevant United Nations body for maritime SAR.

We represent and advocate on behalf of the global maritime search and rescue community and thereby play a significant role in the development of international regulation and policy established at the IMO to improve safety at sea and maritime search and rescue preparedness, so more lives are saved around the world.

Examples of Our Recent Work Include:

o active participation in the International Civil Aviation Organization / International Maritime Organization Joint Working Group on SAR;
o significant input to ongoing revisions of the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue (IAMSAR) Manual – the main global guidance on SAR, for example:
  on mass rescue operations;
  on cold water survival;
  the reorganisation of Volume III of the IAMSAR Manual to make it more user-friendly.
o assisting with the review of IMO’s SAR cooperation planning procedures for passenger ships;
o leading the review of IMO’s guidance on cold water survival;
o leading the review of IMO’s guidance on recovery at sea (the retrieval of people from survival craft or the water);
o assisting with the development of a new SOLAS regulation intended to improve ships’ recovery capabilities.
